For millions of Salvadoran, Guatemalan, and Honduran families living in California, trips to their home countries are a fundamental part of family life. Children go to visit grandparents, attend town festivals, celebrate cousins' quinceañeras. But increasingly, immigration authorities in these countries are requiring formal documentation when a minor travels without both parents.
Guatemala
Guatemala's Comprehensive Law for the Protection of Children and Adolescents (PINA) protects minors under 18 from being taken out of the country without parental consent. The Guatemalan General Directorate of Migration can deny entry or exit to minors who do not present notarized authorization from the absent parent.
