Argentina has some of the most protective minor legislation in all of Latin America. Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Rosario, Mendoza, and other destinations receive thousands of visitors from the Argentine community residing in the United States every year.
What many parents don't know is that Argentina is extremely strict about minors leaving the country. The Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF) and the National Directorate of Migration (DNM) have rigorous protocols at Ezeiza International Airport.

What does Argentina require?
Argentina's Law 26.061 on Comprehensive Protection of Children and Adolescents and immigration regulations establish that minors under 18 leaving Argentina without one or both parents need express notarized authorization from the absent parent.
This is one of the most strictly enforced controls in the region. Minors can be held at the airport if they don't have the correct documentation, even if they have a US passport.
Airports and entry points
- •Ministro Pistarini International Airport "Ezeiza" (EZE) — Buenos Aires (the most important; controls are strictest here)
- •Jorge Newbery International Airport (AEP) — Buenos Aires / Aeroparque (regional and domestic flights)
- •Ingeniero Ambrosio L.V. Taravella International Airport (COR) — Córdoba
- •Francisco Gabrielli International Airport (MDZ) — Mendoza
- •Paso Los Libertadores border crossing — border with Chile
What should the letter include?
The authorization letter for Argentina must contain:
Minor's information: full name, Argentine DNI (if applicable) or US passport, date of birth, place of birth. Authorizing parent/guardian's information: full name, Argentine DNI (if applicable) or US passport, US address and contact phone number. Companion's information: full name, DNI or passport, relationship to the minor. Travel details: departure and return dates from Argentina, cities to visit, airline. Notarized signature: the signature must be certified by a notary public.Apostille: mandatory for Argentina
For a US-notarized authorization to be recognized in Argentina, the Hague Apostille is generally mandatory. Argentina is very strict about the authenticity of foreign documents.
The apostille is obtained through the Secretary of State's office in the state where the document was notarized. This step is critical — do not skip it.
Special situations
Dual citizenship: If your child has an Argentine DNI, they are an Argentine citizen. Argentina applies its law to all its citizens, regardless of their US passport. This means controls apply both when leaving and entering Argentina. Sole custody: If you have sole legal custody by court judgment, bring the document apostilled and translated into Spanish. The MPF may request this documentation at the airport. Deceased parent: If one of the parents has passed away, bring the death certificate apostilled and translated into Spanish. Minor with a different last name than the companion: It is recommended to bring additional documents proving the relationship (minor's birth certificate, etc.). Minors traveling alone: Airlines such as Aerolíneas Argentinas and LATAM have specific services for unaccompanied minors. Check with the airline in advance.Airlines with flights to Argentina
The main airlines with flights between US cities and Argentina are Aerolíneas Argentinas, LATAM Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, and United Airlines. There are direct flights from Miami, New York, and other cities.
