Brazil has the strictest requirements in all of Latin America for minors traveling without both parents. If your family has Brazilian roots and plans to travel to São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, or any other destination in Brazil, read this carefully — the details matter.
Why is Brazil different?
Brazilian law doesn't just require an authorization letter — it requires TWO original letters, and there are specific rules depending on the minor's citizenship. Non-compliance can result in the Federal Police detaining the minor at the airport, regardless of the passport they present.
What does Brazilian law require?
For Brazilian citizen minors leaving Brazil:- •Notarized authorization from the absent parent before a Brazilian Cartório (notary) or at the Brazilian Consulate in the U.S.
- •Document must be in Portuguese
- •TWO original copies — the Federal Police keeps one upon departure and may request the second upon return
The TWO original documents — why?
This is the most important particularity about Brazil. When a Brazilian citizen minor leaves Brazil:
- 1.The Federal Police keeps the first original copy at the moment of departure
- 2.When the minor returns to Brazil, the Federal Police may request the second original copy
