Nicaragua has one of the largest migrant communities in the United States, with significant concentrations in Miami, Los Angeles, and Houston. Many families make frequent trips to visit relatives in Managua, León, Granada, Matagalpa, and other cities.

If your child is traveling to Nicaragua without both parents, it's essential to bring a notarized travel authorization letter to avoid problems at immigration checkpoints.

What does Nicaragua require?

Nicaragua's Code of Childhood and Adolescence (Law 287) establishes protections for minors at immigration checkpoints. The General Directorate of Immigration and Immigration and the Ministry of the Family, Adolescence and Childhood (MIFAN) oversee compliance with these rules at airports and borders.

Notarized authorization is required from the parent who is not traveling with the minor. Depending on the case, an apostille on the document may also be required.

Airports and entry points

  • Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA) — Managua (only international airport)
  • Peñas Blancas border crossing — border with Costa Rica (the busiest)
  • El Guasaule border crossing — border with Honduras

What should the letter include?

The authorization letter for Nicaragua must contain:

Minor's information: full name, date of birth, US passport and Nicaraguan ID if applicable. Authorizing parent/guardian's information: full name, Nicaraguan ID (if applicable) or US passport, address and contact phone number. Companion's information: full name, identification number, relationship to the minor. Travel details: departure and return dates, destination in Nicaragua, airline. Notarized signature: certified before a notary public.

Special situations

Dual citizenship: If your child has a Nicaraguan ID or was born in Nicaragua, authorities apply Nicaraguan law. The US passport does not exempt compliance with local law. Minor traveling alone: Airlines require additional forms for unaccompanied minors. Check with the airline before traveling. Single-parent family: Bring documents proving the situation (custody judgment, death certificate of the other parent if applicable), preferably with an apostille and Spanish translation.

Airlines with flights to Nicaragua

The main airlines connecting the United States with Nicaragua are Avianca, United Airlines, American Airlines, and Copa Airlines. Most direct flights depart from Miami.
