Peru is a very popular destination for the Peruvian community living in the United States. Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Arequipa, and other cities receive thousands of visitors every year. But many parents don't know that Peru Migraciones has strict controls for the departure and entry of minors without both parents.
If your child is traveling to Peru without both parents, you need a properly notarized travel authorization letter.

What does Peru require?
Peru's Law 30466 and the Peruvian Civil Code establish the basis for the protection of minors at immigration checkpoints. Peru Migraciones requires that minors leaving or entering the country without one or both parents present express authorization.
The authorization must be notarized. For the document to be recognized by Peruvian authorities, it may need to be apostilled and, in some cases, translated into Spanish if it was written in English.
Main airports
- •Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) — Lima / Callao (the most important; this is where Migraciones enforces the strictest controls)
- •Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) — Cusco
- •Rodríguez Ballón International Airport (AQP) — Arequipa
- •Carlos Ciriani Santa Rosa International Airport (TCQ) — Tacna (border with Chile)
What should the letter include?
The travel authorization letter for Peru must contain:
Minor's information: full name, date of birth, US passport number and Peruvian national ID (DNI) if applicable. Authorizing parent/guardian's information: full name, Peruvian DNI (if applicable) or US passport, US address, contact phone number. Companion's information: full name, identification number, relationship to the minor. Travel details: departure and return dates, cities to visit in Peru, airline and flight number if possible. Notarized signature: the authorizing parent's signature must be certified by a notary public. Is an apostille needed?
