The Peruvian, Ecuadorian, and Bolivian communities in the United States are large and growing, especially in cities like Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and Chicago. Every summer, thousands of families from these communities travel with their children to visit family in Lima, Guayaquil, Quito, La Paz, and other cities. All three countries have clear requirements for minors traveling without both parents.

Peru

What does Peru require?

Peru's Code of Children and Adolescents establishes that a Peruvian minor or resident in Peru traveling without both parents needs a travel authorization issued before a notary public or justice of the peace.

For minors who are American citizens but traveling to Peru as a destination, Peruvian immigration authorities may request documentation if the minor enters with a Peruvian passport or if there are indications of residency in the country.

Popular destinations

  • Lima — the capital (Miraflores, San Isidro, Barranco)
  • Cusco and Machu Picchu — historical tourism
  • Arequipa — the "White City"
  • Trujillo, Piura, Chiclayo — northern Peru
  • Puno and Lake Titicaca
  • Iquitos — Peruvian Amazon

Ecuador

What does Ecuador require?

Ecuador's Code of Children and Adolescence establishes that Ecuadorian minors traveling abroad without both parents must have notarized authorization from the absent parent.

Ecuador has a particularity: many families from Azuay, Cañar, Loja, and El Oro — the provinces with the highest historical emigration to the U.S. — have children with dual citizenship. If your child has an Ecuadorian national ID, Ecuador considers them Ecuadorian.

Popular destinations

  • Quito — capital and UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Guayaquil — coastal city and main port
  • Cuenca — heart of the Andean region, very visited by the community in the U.S.
  • Loja, Cañar, Azuay — provinces with high migration
  • Galápagos — ecotourism

Bolivia

What does Bolivia require?

Bolivia's Child, Girl, Adolescent Code (Law 548) establishes that a Bolivian minor leaving the country without both parents must have notarized authorization from the absent parent, registered with SEPREC.

Popular destinations

  • La Paz and El Alto — seat of government
  • Cochabamba — the "garden of Bolivia"
  • Santa Cruz de la Sierra — largest and most modern city
  • Sucre — constitutional capital
  • Potosí — UNESCO World Heritage Site
