The Venezuelan, Chilean, and Argentine communities in the United States have grown significantly in recent years, especially in Miami, Houston, Los Angeles, and New York. If you plan to travel with your children to any of these countries, know the current requirements for minors without both parents.
Venezuela
Context and requirements
Venezuela requires notarized authorization from the absent parent for a minor to leave the country without both parents. Given Venezuela's current situation — with many families divided between different countries — this document is especially important. Many Venezuelan children travel between the United States, Colombia, Peru, Chile, or Spain to reunite with relatives.
Main destinations
- •Caracas and the metropolitan area
- •Maracaibo — western region
- •Valencia, Maracay — central region

Chile
What does Chile require?
Chile has strict requirements for minors leaving the country. Law 16.618 establishes that a Chilean minor traveling abroad without both parents needs notarized authorization from the absent parent, a judicial resolution, or a sworn statement before a notary regarding the impossibility of obtaining authorization.
Important Chilean particularity
The requirement applies to the departure from Chilean territory, not just entry. If your child has Chilean citizenship, they need to comply with Chilean requirements to be able to leave the country.
